The Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) is the oldest and largest facility in the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC). Legislatively approved in 1861, LCF is built on 2,711 acres. Re-accredited most recently in 2002, it has a current capacity of 2,335 inmates. The LCF complex consists of three facilities: the Central Unit, the East Unit, and the Osawatomie Correctional Facility. |
The Central Unit consists of the Maximum Security Facility, and the Medium Security Facility. The Maximum Security Facility is 11 acres enclosed by a stone wall built by inmate labor in the 1860's. Four cellhouses are the living units for the maximum custody inmates and have a capacity of 920 inmates. "A" cellhouse, "B" cellhouse, and "C" cellhouse have barred cell fronts. "D" cellhouse, the most recently renovated cellhouse, has the more modern grill cell fronts. "A" cellhouse, due to its proximity to the clinic, has specially designed handicapped cells. "C" cellhouse houses the protective custody inmates, in addition to the special management inmates. |
The clinic is located in the Maximum Security Facility. If an inmate requires specialized treatment, which cannot be provided at the facility clinic, the inmate will be taken to a local hospital for treatment. Dental and optical care is provided on-site, in addition to physical therapy. |

The entrance into the Medium Security Facility is the new Administration Building. This building was completed in 1988. Upon completion of the new Administration Building, a hole was cut into the East wall of the Maximum Security Facility providing passage between the Maximum Security Facility and the Medium Security Facility. The Medium Security Facility, which was developed on 85 acres and has a capacity of 743 inmates, has one dormitory style living unit, "Q" unit, and three modern pod style living units: "K" Unit, "L" Unit, and "M" Unit. "K" Unit has an elevator and is the handicap living unit in the Medium Security Facility. "K", "L", and "M" Units are double-bunked units. |
The East Unit, which is the Minimum Security Facility, is built on 85 acres and houses 628 inmates. There are four living units located at the East Unit--"R", "S", "W", and "X". All of these units provide dormitory style living. "X" Unit is the newest building constructed at LCF. Previously, the East Unit housed the women inmates for the State of Kansas, the women have been transferred to the Topeka Correctional Facility. "R" Unit, "S" Unit, and "W" Unit have all been renovated and converted into dormitory style housing for male inmates. |
