Reciprocal licensure Information

When completing the pink colored application (titled: Kansas Reciprocal License Application), please indicate if you are applying for a reciprocal embalmer, reciprocal funeral director or both licenses by checking the appropriate line located toward the top of the right side of the application. Complete the application and return it to the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts office by the filing deadline–along with the appropriate fees. If applying for a reciprocal embalmer license (only), then the fee is $350.00. If applying for a reciprocal funeral director license, then the total amount due is $550.00 ($350.00 reciprocal application fee, $200.00 funeral director examination fee.) If applying for both licenses, then $550.00 will be due (only one $350.00 application fee per license–no matter if applying for one or both licenses.) Please note that once licensure has been granted by the board, then an initial prorated license fee for each license will be due prior to the issuance of a license. The amount due will depend on your surname and when your due date for renewal will be–anywhere from $7.00 to $396.00. All fees are non-refundable–regardless if a license is granted or not. More information on initial licensure fees can be found later in this information. A copy of all college transcripts (sent to the board directly from the college) must be received by the board by the filing deadline. If applying for a reciprocal embalmer license and you have passed the national examination, then a copy of those results must also be submitted by the filing–and they must be sent to us directly from the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards (ICFSEB.) The telephone number for the ICFSEB is: (479) 442-7076.

When having transcripts or national examination scores sent directly to the Board, please notify us ahead of time so we know that you are considering reciprocal licensure in Kansas.  Sometimes we will receive transcripts and test scores prior to receiving your application, and it is helpful for us to know that an application is forthcoming--and to have your mailing address for notification purposes.

You must complete the top portion of the purple colored application (titled:Reciprocal License Application) before forwarding it to the state board you are currently licensed with. Before sending this application to your current state board of licensure, you should contact that board to see if they charge a fee to complete the remaining part of the application. That state board should then complete the application and mail it directly to the Kansas State Board by the appropriate filing deadline. Address and telephone information for all state boards can be found on the web site of the ICFSEB, which is located at: http://www.cfseb.org/ On their main page, select Funeral Service Regulatory Boards (located on the menu at the bottom of the page) or you can link directly to that list by selecting: http://www.cfseb.org/state.htm

You will receive a letter shortly after the filing deadline notifying you of your appointment time to interview with the board. Filing deadlines are as follows:

December 15th for the January meeting

March 15th for the April meeting

June 15th for the July meeting

September 15th for the October meeting

When meeting with the board, you will be asked why you are applying for Kansas licensure and any other questions the board deems necessary to determine if you meet the qualifications for licensure in the state of Kansas. Following a successful interview with the board, you will be granted a license. A reciprocal embalmer license will be granted following payment of an initial licensure fee. A reciprocal funeral director license will be granted following passing the written funeral director examination (which is generally administered later on the same day of meeting with the board) and payment of an initial licensure fee.

Initial license fees are based on the first letter of your surname (last name.) Example: If your last name is Smith and the S’s renew on July 31st–say 12 months from the time licensure is granted by the board, then the initial licensure fee would be 50% of the full two-year licensure period. On July 31st, you would then owe the full two-year renewal fee. If you were licensed as an assistant funeral director, then any months remaining on your assistant funeral director license will be credited toward your funeral director license.

You will be given an initial license fee bill to sign and pay after licensure has been granted by the board. In the case of a reciprocal funeral director license, this bill will be mailed to you once you have passed the written funeral director examination. ALL funeral director applicants (reciprocal or otherwise) must pass the same funeral director examination before licensure can be granted. A passing score is 75 or higher. More information can be found on our document titled Funeral Director Examination Information which will be mailed to you or can be found on our web site. A direct link is: http://www.Kansas.gov/ksbma/director-exam-info.html

Information pertaining to the requirements for each license can also be found on our web site on the State of Kansas Individual License Requirement information document, located at: http://www.Kansas.gov/ksbma/lic-requirements.html A reciprocal funeral director applicant must be license for at least one-year in another state. That one year requirement does not exist for reciprocal embalmer applicants. Please note that there is a separate/different application and fee when applying for an Embalmer Endorsement License.

When meeting/interviewing with the board, you can expect questions from the board relating to the particular licenses that you are applying for. Board members will have a copy of you applications when you meet with them, and they will want to verify

that you meet the qualifications for Kansas licensure. Interviews are generally scheduled for ten minute intervals.

Applying for licensure can often be confusing. I encourage you to call our office if you have any questions regarding the process or if we can be of assistance. As I’ve previously mentioned, the filing deadline is the 15th of the month prior to a scheduled board meeting. This allows time to verify information and to provide copies to the board for their review prior to the board meeting.
