About the Department

Welcome!

The Adjutant General's Department of the State of Kansas operates to serve the needs of local Kansas communities, the state, and the nation. The department is comprised of three separate organizations:

- Kansas Army National Guard
- Kansas Air National Guard
- Kansas Emergency Management

In addition to leading these organizations, The Adjutant General also serves as Kansas' Director of Homeland Security.

Chartered in the U.S. and Kansas Constitutions, the Kansas National Guard has these federal, state, and community missions:

- Provide military capability for the nation,
- Protect life and property in the state, and
- Add value to our communities.

Kansas Army National
Guard (KSARNG) -

Motivated citizen-soldiers are highly trained in a wide range of military functions, including armor, aviation, field artillery, engineers, maintenance, transportation, medical and other support to augment U.S. Army operations.

Kansas Air National
Guard (KSANG) -

Professional citizen-airmen provide in-flight refueling, radar surveillance and control, weather, medical, engineer, security, and other services to support U.S. military operations around the globe.

Kansas Emergency
Management (KDEM) -

A small organization that provides direction and coordination of local, state, and federal resources, technical advice, and training to mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters in Kansas.

The Governor can expand those capabilities by calling on the Kansas National Guard to respond throughout the state during times of emergency such as tornadoes, ice storms, floods, or civil disturbances when the resources of our local communities are exceeded.

In addition to supporting over 50
Kansas communities in which
Kansas Guard units are based, the Kansas National Guard provides
several statewide community
programs including:

Innovative Readiness Training,
where soldiers and airmen work
projects in state parks and local communities (e.g., construction, transportation, immunizations, etc.)
that simultaneously provides
training in their federal mission
skills.

STARBASE, a nationally
recognized math, science, and technology program for 4th-6th
grade students.

Counter-Drug Program provides
two distinct services: supporting
law enforcement across the state
in the War on Drugs and supporting schools and civic organizations with Drug Demand Reduction.

The Adjutant General's Department
also provides administrative services
for the Civil Air Patrol.
