KANSAS GUARDSMAN DIES AT FORT SILL, OKLA.

The body of a Kansas National Guard soldier was found on Tuesday, July 21, at Fort Sill, Okla.

1st Lt. Jeremy Clawson, 36, Norman, Okla., died while on active duty at the U.S. Army post serving with the 2nd Battalion, 289th Field Artillery. The cause of death is under investigation.

Clawson is a member of the 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry, Kansas National Guard, Kansas City, Kan.  He also served with the 1161st Forward Support Company, 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery and the 105th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, Topeka.

“Jeremy was the kind of soldier every commander wants to have,” said Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the adjutant general. “He was a thorough professional in his duties, dedicated, a great friend to his battle buddies. He will be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”

Clawson, a native of Sandy, Utah, entered the Army in October 1990 as an enlisted Soldier.  He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in October 2006 after completing Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga.  He served in Operation Joint Endeavor from July 1997 to February 1998, Operation Enduring Freedom from February 2004 to May 2005 and Operation Iraqi Freedom from December 2007 to November 2008. During his career, Clawson also served in Bosnia and Kosovo.

While serving in Afghanistan with the 105th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, he wrote a monthly column about his experiences that appeared in the Topeka Capital Journal.

His military education includes the U.S. Army Ranger School, where he was third in his class, Airborne School, Special Forces Assess and Select, Air Assault, Australian Rappelling School, Public Affairs/Broadcast Journalism, Officer Candidate School (federal), and other schools and coursework.

Clawson earned a Bronze Star Medal for exceptionally meritorious service during his deployment to Iraq, the only second lieutenant to receive such an award from Task Force Military Police North during the time he was there.

His other awards and decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (fifth award), Army Achievement Medal  (sixth award), Good Conduct Medal (third award), National Defense Service Medal (second award), Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” device, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (second award), Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Ranger Tab and other awards.

Clawson was a student at the University of Oklahoma studying political science, film and anthropology.

A memorial service will be held at Fort Sill, Okla., on Friday, July 24, at 2 p.m. at the Frontier Chapel. A wake and funeral services will be held in Wichita. Details are pending.

Clawson and his wife, Cheyla, have one daughter and live in Norman, Okla.
