FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 10, 2009 No. 09-074 GOVERNOR SIGNS STATE OF DISASTER DECLARATIONGovernor Mark Parkinson has signed a State of Disaster Emergency declaration for six counties hit by severe thunderstorms and high straight-line winds on Wednesday, July 8. Named in the declaration, which Parkinson signed July 9, are Allen, Anderson, Bourbon, Franklin, Linn and Sedgwick Counties. The governor signed the declaration at the request of Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the adjutant general and director of the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. Bunting made the request to facilitate the restoration of power to communities affected by the storms. “These storms caused major damage to critical services for many Kansans,” said Parkinson. “During the hot summer months, citizens depend on reliable power to shield them from potentially dangerous high temperatures. This declaration will temporarily suspend hours of service rules so that repair crews can continue working to restore power as soon as possible and protect the health of local residents.” The governor’s declaration activates the disaster response and recovery portions of the Kansas Response Plan. “We will continue to be in touch with the emergency managers in these counties,” said Bunting, “and we’ll provide whatever support possible to protect the health and safety of the public.”-30- Follow the Kansas Adjutant General’s Department on Twitter at http://twitter.com/KSAdjutantGen |
