FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 17, 2009 No. 09-028 SYMPOSIUM SHOWCASES UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEMSThe Adjutant General’s Department, in cooperation with a number of public and private sponsors, is hosting the 3rd annual Unmanned Aerial Systems Symposium April 20-21 to showcase new initiatives and technologies for unmanned aerial systems. The symposium is aimed at professionals in academia, the military and business with an interest in practical applications of unmanned systems. The symposium will be held at the Hyatt Regency, 430 W. Waterman, in Wichita. Keynote speakers for the two-day symposium include Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the adjutant general. “Unmanned aerial vehicles are rapidly proving their worth in the military, emergency management and a host of other realms,” said Bunting. “They can go where it is too dangerous or expensive to send a manned aircraft and provide real-time photos and other data in situations where up-to-the-minute information can be critical. Symposiums such as this one are a great way to see what’s on the cutting edge of these technologies and generate new ideas on their applications.” The symposium will also include demonstrations and static displays in the Hyatt Regency parking lot and unmanned aerial demonstrations at the Smoky Hills Weapons Range in Salina. In addition to the Adjutant General’s Department, the symposium is sponsored by AAI Corporation, Kansas Department of Commerce, Salina Airport Authority, Kansas State University, Tracewell Systems, Technology Services Corporation and Cloud Cap Technology with conference management by Flint Hills Solutions. Additional keynote speakers include Rep. Lynn Jenkins, 2nd Kansas Congressional District and Kansas Secretary of Commerce David Kerr. Also speaking are Roger Powers, president and CEO of Flint Hills Solutions; Mike Pool, Flint Hills Solutions; Steve Flach and Kirk Slenker, division vice presidents with AAI Corporation; Matt Tracewell, executive vice president, Tracewell Systems; Andy White, director of business development, Defense Research Associates; Col. Chris Stratmann, director of information management, Kansas National Guard; Dr. Dennis Kuhlman, dean of the College of Technology and Aviation, Kansas State University at Salina; Randy Willis, UAS Office, Federal Aviation Administration Headquarters; Dr. Richard Hale, associate professor, Aerospace Engineering, University of Kansas; Tim Rogers, Salina Airport director; Royal Koepsell, Technology Services Corporation and Glenn Pribbenow, director of the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute.
