FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Oct. 17, 2008 No. 08-114 PRELIMINARY DAMAGE ASSESSMENTS BEING CONDUCTED IN 11 COUNTIES Teams of state and FEMA personnel are conducting Preliminary Damage Assessments
in 11 Kansas counties to determine the extent of damage to public infrastructure
resulting from severe storms and flooding that hit the state Sept. 11
through Sept. 17. Four state teams comprised of 13 people are partnering with an equal
number of personnel from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to conduct
damage surveys in Anderson, Butler, Chase, Cowley, Greenwood, Harper,
Harvey, Lyon, Russell, Sedgwick and Sumner Counties. The surveys began
Oct. 13 and should take approximately two weeks to complete. In order to qualify for federal assistance, two requirements must be
met. First, each county must have a per capita damage of $3.28. In order
to meet the federal damage threshold, there must be approximately $3.6
million in damages. If this threshold is met, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius may
request federal Public Assistance to restore roads, bridges and other
damaged or destroyed public infrastructure. -30-
