FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sept. 15, 2008 No. 08-100 GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS SEPTEMBER 15 AS KANSAS STARBASE DAY Kansas STARBASE, the National Guard's youth education program, was recognized
today for its outstanding dedication and commitment to the children of
Kansas. Gov. Sebelius signed a proclamation designating September 15th as Kansas
STARBASE day. The program is now the largest of its kind in the country
with four academies: Kansas City, Topeka, Salina, and Wichita. The program has a 15 year history of promoting higher student test scores
in math, science and technology. The academies target at-risk students
in the 4th through 6th grades by encouraging interest in science and math
through demonstrations and a variety of hands-on projects. More than 200 Kansas National Guardsmen volunteer their time and expertise
at the academies, which run throughout the school year. For more information about enrollment in Kansas STARBASE, please go to www.kansasstarbase.org. -30- |
