FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 15, 2008 No. 08-042 MILITARY HONORED DURING ARMED FORCES DAY AT HEARTLAND PARK TOPEKA
MAY 17 Heartland Park Topeka is honoring all military personnel and veterans during its 4th Annual Armed Forces Appreciation Day on Saturday, May 17. Gates open to the public at 3 p.m. Admission is free and parking will be available inside the park. All traffic should enter Heartland Park Topeka through Gate A. The days events will feature a judged car show and static displays of military equipment and aircraft, including a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, M1A1 tank, Multiple Launch Rocket System, Paladin mobile howitzer, M9 Armored Combat Earthmover and a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. Other military displays will include the 73rd Civil Support Team, Kansas National Guard Counterdrug and Kansas National Guard Family Programs. Several first responder organizations will also have equipment displays, including the Topeka Police Department, Topeka Fire Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and Topeka EMT. The Fort Riley Mounted Color Guard will bring its state champion mule and wagon team featuring a restored 1870s quartermasters wagon. The Topeka High Marine Corps Jr. ROTC will present the colors and perform military drill demonstrations throughout the day. Two rock and roll bands from the 35th Infantry Division Band will perform free concerts in the afternoon. A USO show will begin at 6 p.m. and a concert by the 35th Infantry Division Band will begin at 8 p.m., culminating in a performance of the 1812 Overture that includes live cannon fire conducted by Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division from Fort Riley.
