FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 1, 2008 No. 08-040 FREEDOM SALUTES TO HONOR 1ST BATTALION, 108TH AVIATION Soldiers and families of the Kansas National Guard's 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation (Assault) will be honored during two Freedom Salute ceremonies this weekend. The 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, headquartered in Topeka with companies in Topeka and Salina; is an air assault helicopter unit flying UH-60 Black Hawks. On Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m. a Freedom Salute ceremony will be held in Salina to recognize the Soldiers of the Salina company. The ceremony will be held in the auditorium of Building 365 at the Kansas Regional Training Center, 2929 Scanlan Ave., Salina. On Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m. a Freedom Salute ceremony will be held in Topeka at the Topeka South Armory, Forbes Field, Building 688 at Gary Ormsby Drive and J Street. The Freedom Salute honors the Soldiers, their loved ones and those who support them for the contributions they made to the cause of freedom during the unit's recent deployment for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Approximately 220 soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation deployed
in April 2006 to their mobilization station at Fort Hood, Texas. In September
2006, the unit deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their mission was battlefield circulation of troops and supplies, combat
air assault and the daily air movement of VIPs and dignitaries. -30- |
