FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jan. 3, 2008 No. 08-003 ROOKS COUNTY WATER SYSTEM RESTORATION TO BE COMPLETE TODAY Approximately 180 residents in the town of Damar in Rooks County are expected to have water back in their water system this afternoon following a leak in the system's main line Dec. 24th. It resulted in a request for residents to conserve and boil their water. The boil water advisory is expected to remain in place following the repairs. Rooks County officials contacted the Kansas Division of Emergency Management when a second leak was reported Dec. 31. Officials requested guidance regarding the situation and asked if the state could haul water into the town. Available Kansas National Guard equipment did not meet the water hauling needs for this particular request and the state provided the county with a list of local milk haulers who could transport water if needed. The city made arrangements for bottled water to be brought in and contacted surrounding fire departments in the event of a fire. On Jan. 1, the city shut off water meters in an effort to find the leak and make repairs. The leak was found on Jan. 2 and repairs made, however, a valve broke and had to be repaired. Local officials expect water to be back on this afternoon. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment district staff have been onsite providing technical assistance and KDHE will be testing the water to determine when the boil water advisory can be lifted.
