FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dec. 13, 2007 No. 07-190 LIMITED SUPPLY OF KANSAS NATIONAL GUARD GENERATORS NOT AUTHORIZED
FOR INDIVIDUAL HOME USE The Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) and other state offices
have received numerous calls from individuals requesting that the Kansas
National Guard deliver a generator to their home. KDEM officials want
to emphasize that the Kansas National Guard is not authorized to provide
generators to individuals. The limited supply of Kansas National Guard generators is being used
for critical emergency needs including to restore power to medical facilities,
hospitals, nursing homes, water and sewer facilities. Many of the Guard
generators are not designed for individual home use, but rather are designed
for large capacity critical infrastructure facilities. Additionally, limited
supplies are not sufficient to provide these generators to homes. Individuals who are without power must provide their own generator or
seek shelter with friends or in one of the public shelters operated by
the American Red Cross, Salvation Army or other such organization. See
list below.* Power Outages Power outages throughout the state of Kansas remain at approximately
113,000 customers at this time. Kansas Rural Electric Cooperatives is reporting 50,000 customers out
of service. Westar is reporting approximately 62,000 customers out of
service, Kansas City Power and Light has approximately 300 with no power
and BPU has 600 without power. *Open Shelters (As Reported to State Emergency Operations Center):
