FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Nov. 21, 2007 No. 07-175 Kansas Homeland Security Program to Air on Public Television A special program on homeland security within Kansas will air on KPTS
Public Television in Wichita on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 9:30 p.m. The program also showcases a new process in place to keep Kansans better
informed during an emergency or crisis. In an effort to improve the state's
capacity to communicate effectively with the public in emergencies, the
state of Kansas entered into a contract with Kansas Public Telecommunications
Service, Inc., KTWU/Washburn University of Topeka, and Smoky Hills Public
Television. The contract allows for emergency information to be broadcast
to the public through public television stations. Commercial stations
may also pick up the broadcast. "This partnership allows Governor Sebelius and other state officials
to go on Kansas Public Television with life-saving information within
minutes of a disaster occurring," explained Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting,
the adjutant general, and director of Kansas Emergency Management/ Kansas
Homeland Security. "Other media outlets, will be able to pick up
that information as well and provide it to the public. This partnership
is one way of showing our commitment to keeping you safe." A Memorandum of Agreement has been signed between the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, The Kansas Adjutant General's Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol. Under the agreement, the three agencies will jointly assume responsibility for deciding the amount and source(s) of Homeland Security and Bioterrorism funding available to support the project.
