No. 07-172

KANSAS NATIONAL GUARD FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE INACTIVATION NOV. 10

The colors of the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 130th Field Artillery Brigade, Kansas National Guard, will be retired during an inactivation ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 10. The 1 p.m. ceremony will be conducted at Nickell Memorial Armory, 2722 S. Topeka Blvd., Topeka. A reception at the armory will immediately follow the ceremony.

“Although the 130th Field Artillery Brigade is being inactivated, this just means a new direction for the dedicated men and women who served in the unit,” said Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the Adjutant General. “The soldiers of the Kansas National Guard are true professionals and tackle every mission with dedication and enthusiasm. I can assure you that their years of experience will continue to be a valuable asset to the Kansas National Guard.”

“This is the second time in the proud history of the 130th Field Artillery Brigade that we’ve had to fold the colors and inactivate,” said Col. Alexander Duckworth, brigade commander. Duckworth noted that the brigade’s history is rooted in the 69th Infantry Brigade, which was headquartered in Topeka, and the 35th Division Artillery, which was headquartered in Hutchinson.

“The inactivation is part of the Army’s continuing transformation,” said Duckworth. “There will always be a need for our field artillery skills. We’re just going from disciples of fire support to apostles of artillery.”

Duckworth said that the Kansas National Guard will still have a field artillery presence in the 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, Wichita, and the 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Hiawatha.

“The field artillery mission will continue under a different flag and a different formation,” said Duckworth.

The brigade will also host a “Hail and Farewell” barbecue buffet at 4:30 p.m. at the armory for soldiers, families and friends of the brigade. The cost is $10. RSVP to Capt. Robert Melton, Robert.melton@us.army.mil or 913-721-0215.
