FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE    Aug. 31, 2007

No. 07-151

Kansas Preparedness Day 2007 event to be in Wichita September 10

“Kansas Preparedness Month” will kick-off with Kansas Preparedness Day, Monday, Sept. 10. at the Sedgwick County Courthouse, 525 N. Main, Wichita, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is open to the public and attendees will be urged to take steps to protect themselves and their families during a disaster, whether natural or manmade.

The city of Wichita will close Main Street from Elm to Central on Monday, Sept. 10 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. so participating agencies and organizations can place equipment and informational booths along Main Street for the five-hour event. Water and snacks will be provided by the American Red Cross and Salvation Army.

A 9 a.m. news conference with Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, Adjutant General and Emergency Management Director; and Maj. John Gaunt of the Kansas Highway Patrol will address the importance of emergency preparedness in the home, community and the workplace. It will be held in front of the courthouse.

Sebelius will also sign a proclamation declaring September as Kansas Preparedness.

“One of the few certainties we have in this world is that emergency situations will arise for all of us at one time or another, and we have certainly seen evidence of that this year in Kansas,” said Sebelius. “If we make plans now to meet those situations like the Greensburg tornado, the ice storm out west and the flooding throughout the state, and to practice our plans, we can lessen the impact these kinds of events have on lives.”

“The three major Kansas disasters this year left record-breaking destruction in several of our communities, reminding us all of the need to be ready for any disaster by having emergency supplies on hand and by talking to our families about where to go for help if home is not an option,” said Bunting.

Featured displays, equipment and informational booths will be provided by a variety of local, state, federal and non-profit emergency response agencies including the American Red Cross, Citizen Corps, Community Emergency Response Team, Kansas Animal Health Department, Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas Division of Emergency Management, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Homeland Security, Kansas National Guard’s 190th Air Refueling Wing Expeditionary Medical Support System (EMEDS), Kansas National Guard’s 184th Air Refueling Wing in Wichita, Kansas National Guard’s 73rd Civil Support Team, Kansas National Guard Mobile Command Post, Kansas Department of Transportation, FEMA, National Weather Service, Salvation Army, Sedgwick County Division of Public Safety, Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Service, Sedgwick County Fire District #1, Sedgwick County Public Health, Sedgwick County Emergency Management, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Wichita Fire Department and the Wichita Police Department and K-9 Unit.
