SEVERAL MORE KANSAS COUNTIES BECOME ELIGIBLE FOR FEDERAL DISASTER ASSISTANCE

As damage estimates continue to be tabulated, more Kansas counties have become eligible for federal disaster assistance resulting from severe storms and tornadoes that occurred in May and for severe storms and flooding in late June.

Individual Assistance granted for three more counties in late May storms

Homeowners, renters, and businesses in McPherson, Smith and Pottawatomie counties are now eligible for Individual Assistance for damages incurred from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding of May 4-June 1. A total of 24 counties in Kansas are now eligible for Individual Assistance as a result of the May storms.

Residents of all 24 counties may be eligible for assistance under FEMA's Individual Assistance program. The Individual Assistance program can help eligible applicants with temporary housing assistance, uninsured personal property and medical, dental, and funeral expenses caused by the disaster,and other serious unmet needs.

Individual Assistance granted for 11 counties in late June flooding

Anderson, Bourbon, Butler, Chautauqua, Cherokee, Coffey, Crawford, Franklin, Greenwood, Osage and Woodson counties are added to the July 2, 2007, major disaster declaration for damages resulting from severe storms and flooding that began June 26. Residents of these counties are now eligible to apply for federal Individual Assistance. A total of 20 counties in Southeast Kansas are now eligible for individual assistance.

Public Assistance granted to government/eligible non-profits in 21 counties in late June flooding

Twenty-one counties affected by storms that began June 26 are now eligible for all categories of FEMA's Public Assistance, which provides money to restore public infrastructure such as roads and bridges and pay costs associated with debris removal. The newly approved counties are: Allen, Anderson, Bourbon, Butler, Chautauqua, Cherokee, Coffey, Cowley, Elk, Franklin, Linn, Miami, Montgomery, Neosho, Osage, Wilson and Woodson counties are now approved for full Public Assistance. Previously these counties had been designated for assistance for emergency protective measures only (sandbagging, police response, etc).

Additionally, Crawford, Greenwood, Harper and Labette counties have been declared for all Public Assistance programs.
Those who suffered damage from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding are encouraged to register online at www.fema.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362)or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing or speech-impaired. The toll-free numbers are available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT daily.
