Recently, the Kansas Braille Transcription Institute, Wichita, donated a bronze plaque to the Great Overland Station in Topeka. The plaque is a tactile American Braille flag and has the Pledge of Allegiance in print and Braille.
The plaque will be mounted on a limestone base. The problem was how to get the base, which weighs almost a ton, from Wichita to Topeka so it can be installed before Memorial Day. The Institute contacted the Kansas National Guard for help.
On May 14, Sgt. Kevin Moberly and Spc. Josh Burrell, 731st Transportation Company, were tasked to carry out this mission. After arriving in Topeka and meeting with Bette Allen, executive director of the Great Overland Station, they set to work.
