In 1999, the Special Operations Division (SOD) began a pilot program to develop regional drug investigative task forces. The SEKDETF, which covers Cherokee, Crawford, Labette, Allen, Bourbon and Neosho counties, became the first of such task forces in the state. The SEKDETF's mission is to reduce the level of drug trafficking and the availability of illegal drugs in the regions. A related goal is to make a significant impact on the level of violence and property crime associated with the use and trafficking of illegal drugs.
This task force receieves support from Midwest HIDTA, the KBI, the Attorney General and nineteen regional law enforcement agencies. The SOD functions as the manager and handles budget matters for the SEKDETF.
