  Kansas criminal history records

Historical records of arrests and dispositions for criminal activity in Kansas are maintained in the Central Repository at the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The Central Repository database receives summary information for these events from contributing police departments, sheriff’s offices, prosecutors and courts throughout the state.

The criminal history information maintained by the KBI includes felony and misdemeanor arrests, prosecution data, court dispositions and information of incarceration in state-operated confinement facilities. The Central Repository does not contain data from any other state or federal agency.

Kansas Central Repository criminal history records are organized by individual identity so that all the offenses committed by that person are kept in chronological order within a single file. The offenses are associated with the subject of the record based upon fingerprint identification.

When criminal history record information is released, it is printed in an abstract of record commonly referred to as a “rap sheet.

Who may request criminal history records

Any individual, company or organization is entitled to obtain criminal history record information from the Kansas Central Repository at the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

What criminal history record information is released

The general public may obtain the following types of adult conviction criminal history information:

  • Court convictions for violations of Kansas law that are felonies or class A or class B misdemeanors. Class C misdemeanor assaults are also part of the database.

  • Court convictions for violations of municipal ordinances or county resolutions that are equivalent to class A or class B misdemeanors or class C misdemeanor assaults under state statute.

  • Confinements in Kansas Department of Corrections facilities.

  • Records of arrests within the past 12 months are also released when the records of disposition have not yet been received.

  • Active diversions that have not yet been successfully completed.

What criminal history record information IS NOT released

The general public is not permitted to receive the following types of criminal history record information from the Central Repository:

  • Arrests that have been disposed and that did not result in a court conviction. (For example, the prosecutor declined to file or the subject was found "not guilty" by the court.)

  • Successfully completed diversions.

  • Expunged arrests, prosecutions, convictions and confinements.

  • Records of arrests that occurred 12 months ago or longer, when the records of disposition have not yet been received.

  • Juvenile offender records.

Types of on-line record checks available on this web site

  • General Public. Any individual or organization may obtain criminal history record information from this web site.

  • Caregiver. If the record check is being done by an agency, business or institution that solely provides care to children, the elderly or disabled clientele, and the subject of the check will be providing direct care to children, the elderly or the disabled, then a caregiver discount may be available. Once the agency, business or institution is assigned caregiver status, record checks may be conducted on this web site. For further information and instructions on filing for caregiver status, go to the Caregiver Accounts.

Other types of record checks to consider

The following types of record checks are available from the Kansas Central Repository through the mail:

  • Persons Reviewing their Own Record. You may request your own criminal history record by submitting a fingerprint card to the KBI. The KBI will release ALL information from your record in the criminal history database and mail the rap sheet to you. This service is NOT available on this web site. For further information and instructions go to the Reviewing Your Own Criminal History page.

  • Certified Record Checks. If you are required to obtain a certified Kansas criminal history record check for a visa application, an adoption or a similar action other than employment, you must mail a letter (not an e-mail) requesting the record check to the KBI. If a record is found, only adult convictions will be included in the rap sheet. For further information and instructions go to the Certified Record Checks page.

  • Fingerprint-based Record Checks. Fingerprint-based identification is the best means of ensuring you receive an accurate response to your record check. If you can obtain your subject’s fingerprints on a ten-print fingerprint card, the KBI will process that card and mail the response to you. For information and instructions on submitting fingerprint-based record checks go to the Fingerprint Cards page.

  • Manual submission. To learn how to conduct a record check without using this web page go to the page entitled Submitting a Record Check through the Mail.

  Government agencies

A number of Kansas statutes and federal public laws require certain government agencies to use criminal history records in the performance of their responsibilities. Federal, state and local governments are entitled to criminal history records in accordance with the laws and regulations that establish that entitlement. Government agencies may conduct record checks on this web site or may arrange other access through coordination with the KBI. For further information and instructions, go to the Record Checks by Government Agencies page.

Identifying the subject of the record check

There are two ways to conduct a record check; by name or by fingerprints.

For a name-based record check, you must know the subject’s first and last names and date of birth. If you also know the subject’s social security number (SSN), middle name, alias names, height, weight, race, place of birth, residence and occupation, these additional items of information may be helpful in locating the record or determining that the subject has no record.  For additional information and tips on conducting a name search go to the FAQ page.

Fingerprint identification is the preferred method of searching the Central Repository. The criminal history records in the Central Repository are tied to the fingerprints taken at the time of the subject’s arrest and submitted by the arresting agency. If you can obtain a set of fingerprints from the person whose record you are searching, then those fingerprints will be searched against the Central Repository fingerprint database. The accuracy of such a search is almost 100%.

  Fees for public record checks

Name-based record checks are $17.50 per individual. Fingerprint-based record checks are $29.75 per individual.
