A native of the Wichita-Augusta area and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Bill Albott was the only KBI director to have also served as superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol. He served the Patrol from December 1, 1951, until January 18, 1975. He was superintendent from 1969 until his retirement. A graduate of the FBI National Academy, he was appointed KBI director in January, 1975, by Attorney General Curt Schneider, and continued in that capacity until his final retirement in January, 1979. Director Albott died April 13, 2000, at a Topeka nursing home, at the age of 79.
