Preface

The Health Care Data Governing Board is pleased to present to you this publication entitled Kansas Health Data Resources. This document is an updated compilation of a survey developed by the Health Care Data Governing Board, Technical Task Force and the Kansas Center for Health and Environmental Statistics, to catalog the health data resources that exist in Kansas.

The purpose of Kansas Health Data Resources is to help policy-makers, program managers, providers and the public locate health information collected in Kansas about Kansans. While Kansas health care data are collected throughout the state, Kansas Health Data Resources centralizes and serves as a "pointer" and provides information about what data are available, where they are located and who maybe contacted about the data. This document is also intended to help enlighten those collecting health data about the other kinds of data that are available, to identify any duplications that might be occurring and to facilitate data sharing between groups. It is not possible for every database that exists about the health of Kansans to be identified in this document. However, it does identify several major databases maintained in state government, universities and private agencies that will be useful for policy-making, health program management and evaluation, referral service and public information. Members of the Health Care Data Governing Board hope the reader will find this document useful in the search for health data and information.

How to Use This Directory

The information maintained in this directory is designed to give the user a quick look at what databases are available within the state for five broad categories of health care data: Health Care Professional, Health Care Facility, Public Health Program (also includes mental health and substance abuse programs), and Health Care Utilization and Quality Review/Improvement Databases. The summary information presented includes the dataset name, owner, brief description, purpose for collecting the data, years available, contact person and phone number for that person. Also included in this directory are three indexes that can be used to locate the databases contained here by their alphabetic order, subject heading and data owners.

Finally, to assist those seeking to conduct a community health assessment, several appendices have been added to this directory that contain listings of health facilities that are licensed by Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) and area Agencies on Aging associated with the Department on Aging. These facilities may be contacted for data specific to a particular community. Consulting local health departments, hospitals and other health care facilities for data is a recommendation from the Community Health Assessment Process available through the Bureau of Local and Rural Health Systems, KDHE. It is hoped Kansas Health Data Resources will assist persons and agencies conducting community health assessments to locate the data they need.

While the directory presents an overview of the databases that are available, the Office of Health Care Information, Center for Health and Environmental Statistics will maintain more detailed information about the databases in the directory and may provide further characterization of the databases with regard to the computer systems that house these data, completeness and frequency of collection.

This directory is expected to be a dynamic document and updates will be provided as additional databases are identified and developed. Your comments, suggestions and/or new contributions for Kansas Health Data Resources are welcome. Please direct any correspondence to:
