To halt the spread of marijuana cultivation in the United States, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration DEA initiated the Domestic Cannabis Eradication and Suppression Program (DCE/SP), the only nationwide grant program that exclusively targets marijuana. The DCE/SP began funding eradication programs in two states in 1979 and by 1985, all 50 states were participating.

Monies distributed to Kansas allow for a joint partnership between the DEA, the KBI, and Kansas Highway Patrol. Together, these agencies work together to assist local law enforcement in the identification and eradication of illegal marijuana harvesting operations - both indoor and outdoor - throughout the state.

The marijuana season generally runs from the end of April through the end of September each year. Statistical information pertaining to eradicated marijuana is reported by each county to the KBI and submitted to the DEA on a monthly basis.
